WEDNESDAY
Interviews and Re-enactions

Wednesday morning  the shooting moved to the Library of the Institute of Nautical Archaeology where Tufan Turanli was interviewed about the Uluburun shipwreck, a ship that sunk at the time of the Trojan war, 13th c BC, carrying what scholars believe was a shipment between kings, including 10 tons of copper and 1 ton of tin, enough material to create 11 tons of bronze that will, most likely be converted into weapons as those hypothetically used in the Trojan war. The shipwreck was excavated by the Institute which has a permanent presence in Turkey although its main headquarters are in Texas A&M University.

Tufan worked at the Uluburun excavation for 11 years (1983-1994) as a researcher and diver and now, as the administrator of the Institute of Nautical Archaeology in Turkey, he talked about the importance of the shipwreck and the discoveries.  All the artifacts from Uluburun are in the Bodrum Museum of Underwater Archaeology. The museum has a beautiful display with a reproduction of the wreck underwater and a reconstruction of what the ship would have looked like.

In the evening the team moved to the Museum where the horse is now located and where all re-enactions are being done. The medieval walls of the castle only date from the 15th century but most of the stones were stolen from a much ancient building, one of the 7 wonders of the ancient world: the Mausoleum of Halikarnassos built in the 4th century BC to be the Tomb of the king Mausolos. Later on the massive building was destroyed by an earthquake and the medieval crusaders  used the debris to built their castle ! imagine the size of the original building !

In this incredible historical environment is where our Greeks and Trojan heroes were fighting this evening up until midnight.
