ANKARA

Ankara, actual Capital of The Turkish Republic, has a long history, under various names, for it was well placed on the major ancient trade routes and was defensible because of its many hills. It was an important trading town under the Hittites, Romans, Byzantines and Seljuks. It was a small town until 1919 when Ataturk decided to use it as his headquarters and in 1927 as the capital of Turkey.
